Environmental Destruction for the Hell of It
May 20, 2008 12:07:09
Look at the picture below. It is a maple tree on a neighbors farm. The tree is probably 150 to 200 years old. It stands off the edge of a field that is used for grain farming.
Over this past winter the landowner and the farmer who rents the land had someone come in with a large large back hoe type machine and break off trees and push them over away from the field. The rationale for their actions was they were gaining more farm land. Well, some quick figures showed they had gained mayber one half acre for all their work and had detroyed a couple of hundred trees and considerable habitat that had coexisted with the farm operation for years.
We had a conversation with a friend who is from Ireland a couple of weeks ago. We were talking about the tree and the blind stupidity that allows this sort of thing to happen all over. He said you just could not do that sort of thing in Ireland to a tree like that. First of all, it was against the law and secondly, the neighbor would probably complain. Sorry to say, the neighbors here are a blind as the perpetrators.
Maybe some day there will be restrictions on this kind of activity. But it will probably be a long time. There is just too much to tear up and most people have no association with the land and the environment so they never know what happens away from the interstate highway.
