Only the Ordinary Can Be President

So here we are today, 2008, and McCain has brought out Palin as his VP candidate and a lot of people have gone so crasy I think they would dump McCain and put her at the top of the ticket. Why? Because she says all the right stuff and maybe she even is what she says she is. At least partly, she may aspire to nothing more than shooting wildlife and praying in church on Sunday. She may have previously not really thought much about Iraq like she said when she first took the stage. It is very possible that she really has no interest in the rest of the world and no concept of other cultures and ideas and people who do not share her world view.
So why is she popular with a lot of voters. Because those voters are the same as her. They live in a small world that is practically devoid of intellectual inquiry. They have access to large amounts of information but are not curious about any of it. They cling to their guns and religion and consistently vote for those who are robbing them of their opportunities, their livelihoods, their very homes, sending their children off to die in wars, poisoning their land and water, and leaving them to die forgotten.
There must be a lot of voters who are just dumb. How else could Bush have received so many million votes and how else could Sarah Palin be even considered as more than a joke being played by John McCain. Simple minded people who are easily manipulated by slogans and flag waving.
Or, consider this, there are huge numbers of people in the US that aspire to nothing more than shooting a moose from a plane. For these people a big trip may be over to the county seat to shop at the big Wal-Mart. During the drive they can listen to very skilled manipulators on the radio spout slogans and slander people of conscience and intellectual complexity.
Average or ordinary are scary terms in this society. Because average or ordinary is pretty pathetically informed and dangerously armed yet unable to tell when they are being led off to slaughter.
