An Introduction

I live in the Midwest, hence the name flyoverfolks.com. We used to say we were 10 years behind the coasts in everything. It is not so anymore. I am sure we lag in some things. Highspeed internet access is just now becoming ubiquitous. It is not there yet and it still is not fiber optic but lots of people have something better than dial-up.

I live in the country. I don't live in a town. This is even worse for being connected because it is easy to sit out here and just be out of touch with just about everything. Which is something I like to do from time to time. See this Post about doing nothing. Highspeed internet access is even less available out here than in some smaller towns in the region. Satellite TV certainly helps also. On the radio there is not much available.

My business is providing internet access in this area. We started this business 11 years ago to provide local dial-up access in our own small town and now are involved in bringing high-speed wireless internet access to several small communities and their surrounding areas. We are in our fifth year of providing high-speed wireless access and it is what I use at my home out in the country.

Being an ISP is an interesting job and I have learned a lot about how things work. Having no formal training with computers I have learned everything as I went along with help from others and just reading and studying on my own. It baffles me how little people understand about how the internet works and what it is.

Being and ISP is also a thankless job. 1 out of 100 people ever express thanks or appreciation for your efforts and I do believe a lot of people just think we rake in money. Little do they know how much it costs to keep everybody online. Read my Article about what actually hinders high-speed internet access in rural areas.

Nonetheless, I do have opinions and thoughts about what is going on in this country and world. Most of my opinions and interests are not typical of this area or region. Although I share a lot of values with the people around me I am sure we diverge in some significant ways. What I am is drawn from my particular experience over the years which was probably not typical anyway.
Thanks,
Michael Dappert
